Some substitutions/thoughts

Has anyone made the flogger from Naughty Needles? I really would like to make it, but I don't know if it's effective or just for the pleasure of knitting a flogger. Also, I'm not going to make it if I can't find a suitible (and admittedly cheaper) alternative to suede that isn't an animal product, and knitting it out of lanyard just seems tacky ( Read more... )

Ok. Y'all can go ahead and gawk, flame whatever
If you are gonna knit it for the fun of it, it wont matter much what you knit it out of.
If you actually are intending to use it, it depends on the effect you are intending.
Thuds or cracks. No matter what, you need some weight to the falls.
I have floggers made from rubberbands, I have floggers made from cowhide, some from suede.
If you are wanting a Non Animal fiber, I would say
tightly knit plastic grocery bags. thin tho, not thick falls, and a lot of them
Cut rubber strips (often reffered to as a spaghetti flogger, very sharp)
Lion Brand suede works, and has the same effect as evil bunnies
Berroco suede knits a little stiffer, so maybe that.
if you are the more sadistic type, you can always weight the ends with metal bb's.
Basically anything that is gonna lend itself to weight (on a throw, you want the falls together, not flyying hither and yon)and then its a matter of feel. What you are wanting. soft, or harsh

actually, I find it awesome! i am also in the lifestyle and was very very worried about posting here.

I have several floggers as well in my toybag. I don't think I would want a knitted one if you are going to actually 'use' it. My absolute favorite is made from hemp and the falls are knotted in different places on all the strands.

Whatever you choose, just know that you are in for a lot of fun! It is absolutely priceless to see folks (vanilla folks usually) reaction if you are walking around with a cutesy flogger clipped to your belt or purse. lol

OH I have the most awesome finger flogger that is jute. Its usually on my purse. People always ask "what is that" here in Iowa. It never got noticed in Chicago.
I have to admit, I have a wall of em. Everything from evil bunny to metal.
Ok, Im a sadist. I admit it.

There are a few suede-like yarns out there (Berroco Suede comes to mind immediately but I am sure there are others with similar feel) that won't break the bank. However, since I don't have the book, I have no idea what size yarn they're suggesting for use. Can you give us an idea of the yarn, gauge or needle size that they recommend?

I don't want to use suede so much because it's expensive as much as I don't really want to use an animal product. But the Berroco is nylon...perhaps if I can find it and feel it at a yarn store I'll use it. I kind of want a yarn with a little heft, though weighting/knotting the yarn or using jute or hemp sounds like really good options as well. Perhaps I'll make more than one.

What about buying and re-using some leather? You could cut an old coat into strips to use. Similarly, you could buy some ultrasuede (fake suede) at a fabric store and cut it into strips. It would be more leathery feeling than a suede style yarn.

You might also find an interesting effect if you use jute twine or hemp twine. Leatherbeaten (a flogger manufacturing company that does nice work... I can't google the site from work) makes a lovely organic flogger that is made out of a jute-like material. Check it out.

Have fun!!

ps: I'm a Caro, too!

I guess reusing leather wouldn't be producing it. If I find a suede or leather coat for cheap, I'll try this out. The ultrasuede is a good idea, too.

I would think you could knit it out of anything if you added weight to the ends...you could use metal, wood, plastic, rubber...anything that would just kind weigh the ends down...you could get as hard as you like. You could either insert them inside knitted ends or you could just get beads and thread them through the knitted tails and then knot it off at the end.

I have that book too and it is the only knitting book [next to my stitchionaries] I didn't eventually swap or gift away. So far...only knit the panties...and I was a lil dissapointed because the sizes were all wrong wrong wong!!!!! But it is an awesome book to own and just leave laying about on the coffee table and refer to for inspiration :) It taught me not to be afraid of knitting a sweater! Plus an entire book of tattooed knitters=love. Knitting is SO not a granny hobby!

I hope it turns out well, too. Something really draws me to making my own BDSM things; I guess it seems more personal to me.
