As promised in another post on this regarding the suitabillity of "Yarn Ball" for this shawl, I hereby present my Spiral Shawl:
Folded in half. This shawl is huge (Good thing). To compare: I am 6'1", and weigh in at 196 lbs (Having lost 45 pounds since Christmas.. weee! :-)
From "A Gathering of Lace".
Yarn: Kauni Lace in "White". 300 metres / 50 grams. One ply. 90% wool, 10% acrylic. I used 5½ balls, but could have gotten off with using 5 if I had not put an extra repeat on.
Size: 90" or 230cm across (That is two four-year-olds atop on each other, folks...).
Modifications: Using a 5mm needle instead of the specified 6mm needle. Knitting 10 (11) repeats of the lace ladder pattern instead of 7(8) or 9(10). The book specifies the blue shawl to be 8 repeats, and the white to be 10. In reality, they are 7/9, and two holes of another repeat, bedded on the border chart.. pshaw.. Talk about confusing. I dont mind the extra inches, though. I also modified the border chart a bit, as there were some stray holes that I did not like. Furthermore, I thought I would have to do a lot of correction because of the _picture_ in the book... Turns out that Meg (Or whoever knits for her) made a mistake in the knitting, and they chose that place for an extreme closeup... How EMBARASSSING!!
Thoughts on this: I wanted a quick project, and loved the edging. Two good reasons, right? The pattern is easy and flies right through your fingers when you get used to it. I might make more shawls from this pattern, in a thicker yarn and a bit smaller, to use as throws :-)
I had never thought that I would knit this shawl, as it looked both tedious and boring, but to tell the truth, even though I have cut severely down on how many projects I have going at one time (Down to two), I was never bored. I loved every second of knitting it, and still love it to death.
Fly shawl, fly...
