Weighing yarn in a project

I have a question for people used to weighing their yarn during a project, because I'm getting a little confused.

I've cast on "Copilot" (link to Ravelry pattern), a cowl knit-in-the-round made from sock yarn. Between sections of the pattern, you weigh your yarn so you're sure you can finish the project and make a well-balanced item ( Read more... )

That does sound weird.

I weighed a lot when I knit my Nuvem.
I needed 6.45 g per row (~2100 stitches) and 8.3 to bind those off.
So only 29% more yarn used than for a regular row - so to me, your measurements look off!

If you want to make sure - you could weigh your yarn now, pull in a life line, bind-off, weigh again, undo the bind-off. So you know how much the bind-off alone uses.
