Help!

I'm working on my first big lace pattern. And I'm confused as all get out. The pattern says

k3, yo, k4, (k1, yo, sl1, k2tog, psso, yo, k3) 5 times, k2, yo, k3The problem I'm having is when I get to the yo, sl1. It seems like when I yarn over, and then sl1 (you slip purlwise, right?) I lose the yo when I k2tog, and it winds up decreasing instead ( Read more... )

I'm not sure whether I understood your question right, but both YO & k2tog and psso & YO cancel each other out. YO increases one and k2tog (and psso) decreases one, slipping stitches doesn't affect the actual stitch count. So the total will look something like +1 -1 -1 +1, which adds up to zero. And yes, you usually slip purlwise unless the pattern says otherwise. :)

I know it's supposed to be an increase, then decrease, but it seems after I sl1 and then try to k2tog, the yo disappears when I wrap the yarn around the needle. So I wind up with no yo, a sl st, and then a decrease, if that makes sense. I may take a video of it, since it's hard to describe!!

Oh, now I understand what you mean, I thought you meant in a bigger picture, not literally. Sorry about that.

I whipped out my own WIP and tried a row to see what you could be doing wrong, but I'm honestly not sure, works just fine with me - it won't look like a regular stitch just yet, but it's still there. :/ Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

If you're slipping one purlwise, you need to do a purlwise yarn over before that. I had a similar problem when I first learned how to do yarn overs. Try that or do a knitwise yarn over before slipping the stitch knitwise and see if that helps.

It's actually pretty amazing lol. Which is good because I was so frustrated!

Isn't that just be BEST feeling when you finally figure it out? I just finished a couple of baby blankets with a pattern that was driving me crazy, then it happened! Well worth the frustration.
