Yarn dupe?

Oct 29, 2011 14:54

Does anyone happen to know if there is a less expensive yarn similar to Tilli Thomas Symphony Lace? I'd need about two skeins of Symphony Lace, and $80 is a little steep for me right now.

Thank you! :)

Have you tried Webs or Hampton Knitting? Both have lovely yarns at various prices. They have web sites.

Thanks so much for the Webs suggestion! :) I ended up deciding on this: http://www.yarn.com/webs-knitting-crochet-yarns-weight-lace/webs-knitting-yarns-artyarns-silk-mohair-glitter/ No beads, but at least it has glitter. :)

I'm guessing pretty much any lace-weight yarn will work. If you want the beads in the finished object, though, you'll probably have to string them yourself.

So it's a beaded kid mohair laceweight? Get some Kidsilk Haze or the Elann version and string fine beads on it yourself.

I imagine you put the beads on the yarn, as many as you think you'll be needing for the amount of yarn, before you begin knitting. So if you imagine you'll need a hundred beads per skein/hank, then you string on a hundred beads.

Then when you get to a place you want to place a bead you pull it up from the ones sitting there on the strand and knit it in place.

Not difficult, just takes some preplanning and guesswork or possibly math. Maybe you want to use one bead per yard of yarn?

One bead per yard seems like a nice, quick way to estimate. inauroraswake, who commented below you, suggested an alternate method with beads as well if you want to check it out. :)

I never even knew about that site! Nothing glittery is there right now, but it looks like it's updated frequently with new things, and I'll surely use it in the future. Thank you so much for recommending the site! :)

For future projects, you can always try ebay. People are always buying yarn and then deciding they need to offload it.

Haha, my method was to join a stitch n bitch group made up of entirely yarn-hoarders. Someone always has just the thing I need in their stash and it's lots of fun to trade.

One possible downside to this method: after a couple of years, my yarn collection is slowly heading out of 2-giant-bin territory and into 3. Do not use this method if you have limited space for storage. :D
