So I'm looking to get some better quality needles, I currently have Boye straight needles in size 6US and 8US (which is really all I need for what I do, I'm still a beginner, having knitted only dishcloths and currently working on a scarf, but I plan on expanding my comfort zone rather quickly) My 6's are fine but my 8's are terrible, I don't know ( Read more... )

Based on personal experience? Addi Addi Addi. Addi lace. Addi lace circulars, no less than 32" long. You can do ANYTHING with those. I never ever EVER buy straight needles; there's no need for them, since it's easy to knit flat on circular needles.

Totally second this. Coming from someone who likes metal needles with pierce-you pointy tips, Addi lace needles are my favorite. I also always work on circs. They're like the perfect all-in-one.

It's really all about what you like working with though, so if you can afford to experiment, do it!

I have no idea what you may or nay not be doing wrong, because you should treat them exactly as if they're straight needles. How long are they, and how wide was the work?

I kind of figured that needles were subjective but I wanted to get some reviews on them since I couldn't find much of anything online, though I may not have been searching with the right keywords.

I did hold a pair of Addi Lace today at the LYS, and I'm pretty sure I'm in love.

Thank you!

I don't know Chaiogoo, I've only seen other people's Lantern Moon needles, and I've not seen Takumi Velvet available over here, but I can tell you that I love my Takumi circs and DPNs, and I've been pretty happy with (original) Addis over the years too. Mostly I use birch (Brittany) or bamboo (Takumi) at the moment, and I don't use straight needles so can't give you an opinion on those!

Which would be better for any given project at least partially depends on what yarn you intend to use - slippery metal is different from 'grabby' bamboo is different from smooth birch, etc. In an ideal world you'd have enough different needles for any eventuality. :)

I would go to knitpicks for cable needles. Addi makes some really good needles but also a bit expensive and after trying out knitpicks, I'm not going back to addi's. I have Takumi's needles and while I like them, you get what you pay for them compared to my Crystal Palace needles, if your store has them, I would go for them instead of Takumi it's a little extra money but worth it.

Just like everything else from food to fashion, YMMV. Prepare to spend some time and/or money finding out what you like. In addition to the advice about trying out needles at your LYS, my only suggestion would be to go slow, don't but a set because the price is good, unless you already know your tastes pretty well. I have bought hundreds of needles over the years and I still can't answer the question which are "best", just which do I like best and for what use(s).

Sorry, "buy a set", not "but a set".
