Have you tried looking on ravelry using the advanced search? You can put in how much you have, weight, etc. and see what comes up. I did a quick search and figured out how to do "not socks" (click on socks, then select not ( ... )

I made these fingerless mittens last year: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/lepidoptera-mitt

They look more complicated than they are, so it was a good way to practice making thumbs. Plus, they're perfect for knitting or typing in the winter when my hands are always cold!
