Riptide Socks, Now with 100% More Name!

There were lots of great entries, and it took me a long time to decide, but I finally chose one. Congratulations to Liz G and PinkPorcupine (on ravelry) who both (independently, I assume) suggested "Riptide". I really liked the reasoning PinkPorcupine gave: "It's unexpected, and it sucks you in." Both of these lovely ladies will be receiving a ( Read more... )

these are identical to the ones in Janel Laidman's new book "The eclectic sole". Hypnosis looks exactly like this.

Well, damn. I searched all over Ravelry for a similar pattern to make sure it hadn't been done yet. But I only searched for things with water-y names or spiders, so I never saw those. They're different in the toes, heels and cuffs; and the stitch pattern is almost the same, but I twisted the knit stitches.

my two cents gayle_rose June 24 2008, 16:01:19 UTC
it happens. There is another person that did a similar pattern in the sock knitters annonymous group. I think she called hers sunburst or something. there are only so many combinations available. I dont think its uncommon for people to end up with the same patterns.

Yeah, that was my opinion too. The two patterns aren't exactly the same, and I hadn't even seen hers until after I made mine.

So I guess I'm too late to suggest "undertoe"? See what I did there? :)

What about the pattern do you not understand? As far as thicker yarn and bigger needles, just make a swatch in the lace pattern to see how many stitches you have in an inch; then multiply that by the circumference of your head to get the number of stitches to cast on. Then you should be able to pick up the crown shaping on whichever round has the same number of stitches as your cast-on, if that makes sense.

Question about lace cap (babypink)‏ reply back anonymous March 24 2009, 03:12:14 UTC
I really don't understand the pattern on the whole, if I following the instruction correctly so far, espeacially in the "crown" part between am not good at reading the patterns very good especially with all the abreviations and symbols eg. "*,(),[]". I really think I could do it if its breakdown a little or if I understand it better at a beginner's level and maybe next time it will be easier. Thanks for replying its really appreciated. :)

The () are just where I put metric measurements, if you prefer that to imperial measurements; ignore them if you like.

The *s and [] mean the same thing: repeat what's between them a set number of times. I had to use two different symbols because I had some repeats within repeats. For example, on Rnd 1 of the Crown Shaping, you'll k2tog, then you'll [k2tog, yo] 8 times, then go back to the beginning and k2tog again, then [k2tog, yo] 8 more times. You'll keep repeating this until you get back to the beginning of the round.

And for future reference, all of my abbreviations are here.

Does that help?
