James Lester was a pragmatist and so he couldn't say the memo was a surprise, even if it was a disappointment. It had been clear the days of the ARC had been numbered from the moment Christine had died and three members of his field team had disappeared.
He'd known the project would be closed when he'd reported Sarah's death and then Becker's resignation. He'd known he'd be blamed for the failure and shunted to some backwater position. It was the truth and he deserved to be blamed.
But he also knew that without the ARC, many more would die.
