“Please be careful,” Nick murmured as he stared at the frozen pond.
Shadow pressed his nose against Nick's hand before gingerly stepping onto the ice, pausing when it creaked. He continued, even though every instinct demanded he returned to the safety of the shore.
He felt the ice shift and crack beneath his paws and knew that it was too thin to support his weight... but he continued on.
He edged towards the hole, his eyes scanning for... there!
With a happy near-bark, Shadow lunged forward, feeling the ice disintegrate beneath him as his teeth closed around the boy's jacket.
