Helen assumed a pose James recognised from far too many lectures from her ex. He bit back an impatient sigh, anything he could learn from her might be useful in escaping this world.

“We are in the year 102 of the New Calender - sometime in what we would call the late 23rd century. From the records I found, there was a prolonged period of harsh winters and summer droughts. Food production plummeted and people rioted. The government clamped down and martial law was declared.”

“And this place?”

“It is a holding camp before they decide where to send you.”
