An ominous crack from the door told James they were running out of time. He sighed deeply before opening the manhole and indicating into the gloom. “After you.”
“You must be joking.”
The woman's glare would have caused many men to run, but James was made of sterner stuff and merely nodded at the shuddering door. “That won't hold for long and then you'll be out of time. Now,” his voice hardened, “if you want to survive, I suggest you do as I say. Unless you wish to face it up here.”
At her rather startled look, James added, “Alone.”
