I wouldn't call it senseless if you are talking about vermin that has invaded your home. I got one with a trap seven or eight months ago, and Gir caught one on his own while we were in DC. It seems like our rodent incursions happen when there is a change in the weather. I say kill as many as you can, as there is no chance of rats or mice going extinct.

I'm sure I've said this before, but mice in city apartments are a good sign... it means you don't have rats. If you have mice, and suddenly they all disappear for no obvious reason, that's a bad sign... it means you probably have rats who have eaten all the mice.
At least, that's what they told me in Boston.
I think I'd rather have neither. Except maybe the cute white ones that live in cages and sometimes get run through mazes or fed to snakes.
p.s. a cat won't rid you of mice completely, it will just keep the population relatively under control. you need to plug the holes where the mice are getting into your building, else you will have mice forever. *insert evil squeaking mouse overlord laughter here*
