And yet they don't quite learn fast enough.

One can never learn all that there is to know.

A rather succinct summary of the problem. Until they learn how to be what they are, instead of merely what he meant them to be, they will forever be weak.

[Her eyes track away, and she looks down, scratches idly at her forehead. When she speaks again it's quieter, more tentative.]

How're your wings?

[Lucifer looks blankly at the phone. After a minute he blinks, the perfect image of dawning realization. His voice is pitched to convey surprise, but there's a sharp, sarcastic edge cutting beneath it.]

In the all-consuming celebration of the Magician's return, I completely forgot. I have been rather adversely affected by his stupidity, haven't I?

Lucifer! You dear old thing, you had me worried a moment there.

It's all immensely tedious, I know, but if we've got the Lux back-- and the Lux's founder-- surely it won't be all bad?

[He doesn't know the wizard in question, and so quite cheerfully dismisses that particular concern.]

[The appreciation for Dorian's concern, and his dismissal of the Magician, is evidenced by the warmth in Lucifer's voice.]

What of yourself, Dorian? Were you well during the invasion?

That you consider it an improvement is already a step in a positive direction.

Oh, I managed all right. Mostly kept to myself, you know, tried to save my skin. Discretion being the better part of valor, you know? [There's a merry, self deprecating laugh. He's lying, but he's doing it very well.]

That poor fellow of yours, you've seen to him? His face when he found out...

As long as you were not harmed, then I am content. Otherwise I'm afraid I'd have to find the demons responsible and rend them to their component parts.

It was actually the other way around. He was the one who came for me.
