So, here I am, on a Thursday morning, looking at an obscenely large to-do list, all with nice little due dates attached to them when, to my supremely utter amazement, my computer refuses to boot

That's a little surprising to hear. I switched to AMD from intel, specifically due to the horrific instability I used to see in my Dad's old Pentium II when it was new. The thing ran like a car assembled entirely out of junkyard bits. And not good bits, either.
But dood, the dust, the dust! Gotta be careful about that sort of thing. Get yourself a can or three of compressed-air dusters and bust em out now and again. I don't think I've dusted my computer more than twice a year at best.
I don't know about the Opteron series, I've only ever used the Athlons, with great success. I dunno if that plays a factor at all. I wouldn't be surprised if AMD chips run a bit hotter than Intels, but it's possible. If you're totally stuck, I do have the components I just replaced. It's a working computer, sans chassis, power supply and drives or peripherals. It worked well for me, even if it's a tad slow now -- I could lend them to you or something. Yeah, the dust... I actually have an air compressor (a big automotive grade thing) in the garage I use for air tools for working on my car... It works awesome for dusting off the good old computer... I should have dusted it sooner...
I think I've decided - I'm just going to go ahead and get the new parts...
