Tired

I've not been sleeping well. I sleep for two to three hours at a time. When I do sleep I have nightmares. I've got a prescription for sleeping pills but I haven't been taking them. I want to get a good eight hours of sleep. But I don't know when it will happen. All I know is that I want and need sleep and I don't want to take a pill to make ( Read more... )

My Father suffered from insomnia most of his life. What he found most useful when he was no longer able to take sleeping aids was to find one subject to try to concentrate on. (His problem was that while sleeping his mind went fifty directions at one...mostly about his work.)

It took him a while to come up with a set of thoughts which could hold his attention and allow his mind to slow down enough for sleep.

I have a similar problem but my problem is a physical problem which wakes me...(that and phone calls from my mother at times when I'm trying to sleep.)

Working on letting your body relax is one of the things that works for me. Being able to let go of thoughts helps too. Do things that make you feel safe and comforted, cuddle with someone, a hot shower or bath, allow your mind to relax. I know this is really hard for you. Don't fight the emotions, let them out and release. Forgive yourself for surviving. You are loved, tomorrow will be different. {{{hugs}}}

I definitely understand not wanting to take a pill to get a full night's sleep. But sometimes push comes to shove. I was having trouble with waking up at ridiculously early times on may days off, when I had the luxury of sleeping as long as I wanted. I finally knuckled under and got some OTC sleeping pills, and I only take them on Saturday nights before bed.

I've read snippets of things that might help as you prepare for sleep. Developing some kind of routine that eases you into it seems to be one of the things recommended. Sometimes it can be started an hour or two before you intend to turn in, from what I understand.

I hope you find something that works for you. Not getting enough restful, uninterrupted sleep affects your whole life.

But it might be important to take them, even once a week, just to give your mind and body time to rest. It may even alleviate the nightmares. You won't overdo it, once in a while is better than not sleeping well for prolonged periods. :/
