I was listening to Tuesday's Dan Patrick Show today (thank you, iTunes) and they brought up an interesting question regarding the coverage of Michael Jackson's death, and that was "Who else would get this much coverage if they died

Madonna would be pretty big, for sure, but I don't think her music would be celebrated as much.
The current Pope is rather new, so his death would be pretty big if it is sudden.
I'm not sure about the Queen, although the fact that Prince Charles would be taking the throne would probably expand the newsworthy-ness of the moment.
I disagree about Madonna. She would be just as celebrated. I can see radio stations doing weekend marathons of her music. For me at least and for many people I know she is a bigger star than MJ.
The current Pope is rather new, so his death would be pretty big if it is sudden It would be big but I don't think he has the popularity John Paul II had.
I want the Queen to live well into her 100's. I don't want Charles being King. I don't like him at all.
I don't know about freaking out over President Obama's death, but it would be a pretty big shocker. I think circumstances would feature heavily in people's reaction, whether it's by assassination, riding a bicycle into a tree, or swine-flu.
The press coverage has died down a bit where i live but we don't have as many news channels. There were a few documentaries on but i only watched one - a tribute show about his music. The rest were just focusing on scandals and weirdness.
Madonna, the pope,Queen Lizzie, Stephen Speilberg, Margaret Thatcher maybe? If Princess Mary of Denmark or Elle Macpherson died we'd never hear the end of it.
Britney Spears and Amy Whinehouse perhaps but i'm surprised that they aren't dead already.
Our Prime ministers don't get assassinated or die in office they merely vanish into the ocean.
The Jackson stuff is still pretty big here. Who's going to pay for the funeral service? Who gets the kids? Where will he be buried? Will he be cryogenicly frozen? I don't know if we need answers, but the press seems to like asking questions.
I'm so sick of the MJ death coverage. I mean, besides futbol stuff? That's what came up the most on the news over in Spain. I also want to know why his death is more frontpage worthy than a military coup in Honduras but whatev CNN.
(I may or may not have some pent up annoyance with this whole matter. :p )

She is so iconic and is still current today.
The Pope depends on his popularity. People loved John Paul II.
Queen Elizabeth will be just as big. She has ruled for so long. Most people can't remember a time where England didn't have Queen.
