Well, the books from Fields Book Store that I described obliquely before arrived yesterday, and thanks to softening her up a bit, swan_tower responded to their arrival with, "Yay! Books!" ...rather than the dreaded, "What did you get this time, Kyle?"

For those who are interested.... )

Bah! Who needs bookshelves? They're all the way across the room or, sometimes, not even in the same room with you! What sort of lax security feature is that? Therefore, I advocate keeping them close, like very, very bad enemies or ferrets. Yes...

...keep them in your PANTS.

You'll always know where they are, heck, if you're sitting it's kinda hard not to! You can keep a personal track of your books and they'll always be pre-warmed for maximized reading enjoyment. Good luck!

P.S. *snerk* Okay, so now I'm actually trying to picture you walking around with a pair of pants stuffed with all the books you own. It's kinda funny. Just, whatever ya do, don't sneeze. Paper cuts are a bitch, particularly from those books with gold gilded pages. eek.

I have to say that, of my friends, you have the best claim to being stream-of-consciousness personified.

Fascinating, how you keep on completely misrepresenting my attitude toward your purchases.

Please! We all know you're a book hater. Don't deny it. The journey to recovery can only begin once you've admitted to having a problem.

I give you a hard time because a) I'm too far away to smack and b) you don't remember where I live. Kisses! \^3^/

I must misrepresent if at all possible. It's an imperative. You didn't read that in the fiancée handbook?

Yeah. I thought it might be, particularly after you wrote this.

While Frankenstein is often credited with being the first science fiction novel, few modern readers realize that its SF elements go far beyond Frankenstein's corpse-raising experiments. At the time Shelley was writing, English explorers had not yet mounted a modern expedition to the pole, nor had they used dog sleds or the other methods of travel she describes.

Huh.

Jay Lake's Rocket Science had a saucer dug up by the Nazis from frozen regions, and Stargate SG-1 had some Ancient stuff in Antarctica.

There are some other recent publications on alchemy that might interest you - Promethean Ambitions and Alchemy Tried in the Fire (both by William Newman - who also teaches at IU) are great (and I don't just think this because he's my dissertation advisor - the NYT Review of Books liked them too). I think Promethean Ambitions would be particularly useful for the spec fic writer.
