Apparently, the Smithsonian struck a deal with Showtime to give that network right of first refusal to most of their archives.

Kind of dumb for a publically-funded institution, right? *sigh*

I'll wager that PBS didn't have the boatloads of cash that the Smithsonian wanted and Showtime Networks offered.
