Ports and Politics

For once in my life, I actually agree with the Bush administration's stance on an issue. That I find myself agreeing with their logic (if not their diplomacy and politicking surrounding their decision) is perhaps less distressing than the fact that my agreement with their policy has caused me to double- and triple-check my reasoning. It's always reassuring, in my opinion, to be reminded that no political person is wrong 100% of the time - too many people have a tendency to just look at an issue and say "Bush is supporting this, I agree with it" or "Bush is supporting this, I disagree with it." (I used to be that kind of liberal, many years ago...) It's much healthier and more reasonable to always consider that there is a chance that they are doing the right thing (even if for the wrong reasons) - the fact that it causes you to double and triple check isn't a bad thing, though, it means you're thinking about it. :) Thinking about stuff is good. ;)
I agree with Bush on this too, really, how is an Arab company all that different from a British company doing it? :)

I don't believe that the operation of 'streams' of interstate or international commerce should be privatized. Also, this isn't punishing the government of the UAE as I understand it; the company is private.

I actually believe that you're right about privatization of port operation, but the fact is that it has already been privatized. Either way, the hooplah wouldn't be there if this had been a different country.

...and while the company is private, it's also wholly owned by the UAE government.
