Here, folks is episode one of the series of posts I promised yesterday:
You may remember in this post, I complained about the stiff, unmanageable, cheap vinyl hose I bought with my compressor this summer.  I had planned to suggest either to Hubby or my parents that a ( Read more... )

Rusty water from air tanks is normal. The inside of the tank is bare steel, no oil is needed or wanted. The oil will only enter the air stream, and if you were to use the compressor for painting, the minute amounts of oil will mix with the paint and you'll ruin the finish with fisheyes and bubbles. It's also not good for the hoses, as the oil will soften and swell the rubber, weakening it. Keep draining the water after each use, you can even keep the draincock open between uses. You'll wear out the pump before the tanks ever go.

The hose you got is very similar to mine. It should last you many years. Nice thing is that it does not use clamps or crimped ferrules to hold the fittings on. When the hose eventually wears out at the fitting ends, just cut off the worn section, cut the hose off the fitting, then stuff the hose onto the fitting till it seats. The hose and fitting are made so the more pressure, the tighter the hose grips the fitting's special barbed ends. It's like Chinese finger handcuffs.

I read about that on the Ridgid website. I didn't realize that when I bought it. I haven't really examined the fittings to see what they're talking about.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: A really good hose is truly a thing of beauty.
