JHK is, as always, down on subculture with extreme grouchy intensity. Which is a shame, I thought the overblown generalizations made the conversation much less interesting.
Your comparison to the hippies was very apt. I think there's some psychological bias towards viewing "foreign" subcultures as a threat, and probably towards viewing one's own subculture as a force. However, political movement is harder than subculture. (And subculture was harder in the time of the hippies, so that difficulty gap has become even bigger since.) The reality of subculture is that often it's a political force (or even a "way of life") in name only. Subculture is often just a fun thing to do on the weekends.
