I don't know, it seemed rather extraneous to me.

And, to be honest, I would think a perfectly reasonable reaction on Tatooine would have been a collective "meh." They seemed more concerned with crime lords and moisture farms than they were concerned with the Empire and its subjugation of planets. Rushing out in the streets to whoop it up? I don't know...aside from Luke wanting to hear about the battle between the rebellion and the Empire, I didn't get the sense that the people of Tattoine or Mos Eisley gave the Empire much mind. A nuisance, perhaps, but they had other things to occupy their time.

My only thought is what took them so long?

Mind you I don't have a blue ray player right now, so it's a moot issue for me. However they eventually released the originals on DVD after people complained for long enough. I'm sure they'll eventually do the same here once they get everyone to buy this set. You see they'll make more money that way...
