I know, I know, we still have to get past Yom Kippur before we get to Sukkot, but since we don't eat on Yom Kippur, and Sukkot is only 4 days after, I want to get my menu planned and start grocery shopping

Does having a day in which melacha is permitted really provide a significant benefit over the three-day yom tov that those of us in America will be experiencing? Or does that Friday become so harried with Shabbat prep that it becomes just as bad?
If I decide to cook everything on Wednesday, I'm free.
Or, the chulent goes in the crock pot and that's a 15 minute prep time, I make the soup on Wednesday because it always tastes better the second or third day and the chicken... my oven has a timer.
