AFTER A WHILE

After a while, you learn the subtle difference
Between holding a hand and chaining a soul,
And you learn that love doesn't mean leaning.
And company doesn't mean security,
And you begin to learn that kisses aren't contracts
And presents aren't promises,
And you begin to accept your defeats
With your head up and your eyes open,

I love this poem. It can apply to all our lives, but a certain couple comes to mind. ;-)

I think the author of this poem is actually Veronica Schoffstall and it's entitled "After the Dawn". Does anyone know for sure? I'm trying to find this out! --Lynn

I don't know. I found this poem at www.poetryamerica.com under Best Love Poems and it was copyrighted to Natasha M. Beard. I've never heard of Veronica Schoffstall. I'm not sure when or from where this poem originated.

So very weird bizarre this poem. I wrote poetry throughout high school in the 70s. My mother just cleaned out some old papers and came across many of my poems, one of which was THIS one! I vaguely remembered writing it and was amazed at my clarity at the age of 16 (most of my poems were more "adult" than I was, but I have an old soul I guess). I didn't give it a thought until a friend of mine emailed me a copy this poem, hoping it would help me out now during a difficult time! Well, she said she was just sending a poem - and when I read it, I thought "Why, that's MY poem!" I don't want credit for it, but it's just one of the weirdest thing that has ever happened to me. I used to submit my poetry to my English teacher and my mom sent in a few poems of mine to poetry publishers, who knows what happened!
