Do not take I-95. Because no matter what, traffic will be a nightmare. Instead, take the PA Turnpike west, then 222, then 30, and then catch 83 south. MUCH less traffic and frustration - and despite Google Maps *saying* it takes a bit longer, once you factor in the insane traffic on 95, it's actually less time.
We usually take Route 1 west and then some back roads. Both options are MUCH nicer drives than 95 - more scenic, less traffic, *much* less frustration, etc.
It's a Friday during the summer... that's enough to make traffic insane.
I never have much trouble with 95.
As much as I've heard you complain about the traffic on 95 and how long it takes, I'm surprised. It generally takes Shirt and I about 1 1/2 - 2 hrs to get to Hunt Valley (Route 1 and some back roads), I think the one time we took 95, it was at least 2x that.

In the past when I've complained about traffic on 95, it's been on a Sunday afternoon when I'm returning home from points South.
Today I'll be heading down to Towson a bit after 9am. Friday Summer traffic shouldn't be an issue.
Tonight (technically tomorrow) I'll be driving up at 2am, and again traffic (nor construction, for that matter) won't be a consideration.
