Um, Sorry To Bother You Again. (DN Spoilers?)

But now I have this question about Mello in my head, and I wanted to know what my fellow DN-fans think. (And this is about canon Mello, but feel free to interpret!) Do you think that Mello ~

A) Had the primary goal of beating Near and becoming number one, and this was more important to him than catching Kira and avenging L? Because he claims he ( Read more... )

I'm going to go with A. I don't think that Mello ever particularly cared about Kira. He joined the mafia, he committed crimes, so a world with Kira would be a dangerous one for him, but that's the only reason I can think of for him wanting to stop him. He never once said anything about being against Kira's morals. It was all about beating Near, and maybe a little bit of avenging L. Because I think L was the only person he could actually respect and look up to without resenting them for being superior to him. I don't think Mello is idealistic at all, except when it comes to himself--he wants to be THE GREATEST, which is idealistic in itself.

...I actually just wrote fic dealing with this exact issue. XD; It's on my LJ. Weird.

I think it was more a mix of beating Near and avenging L at first... and then at the end he realised defeating Kira was jsut as important as those things, and he was able to let go of the resentment he had for Near and do something that in the end would help him defeat Kira. Even though it cost him his life in the end :/

So I'd probably say C, but avenging L went hand in hand with beating Near for him. Though B is also valid because well, we'll never know exactly what was going on in his head, he could have been bluffing about beating Near being his number 1 priority (his tough guy exterior XD), when really he wanted to catch Kira just as much from the start.

I think it's more C. A was his goal when he was younger, and then when things got more down-to-business, it evolved into his true goal, which is B. But it took him a while to get there, just like it takes anyone a while to shed their childish ways.

I think it was A and B at the same time. Mello showed a strong passion towards being number one, but he was also the one who said that the thirst for revenge was the most powerful force. I think he wanted to be number one, but he also wanted to crush Kira. He wanted "Kira's head".

So killing two birds with one stone sounded good for him (^^)

Of course, option A was finally overcome by the end of the series (*´A`*)

What do you think?

Sorry for spamming, damn my inability to edit comments! Anyway, I just wanted to say that you should post this on Justice! Lately there's very little discussion of the actual series...but there are a bunch of new people who seem to have come TO discuss it...this might help! :D (Not that I go on much anymore, but uh...)
