What World Championship of Jousting?

So last night, Dad asks me, "Do you have National Geographic?"

"Dad, you know I can't afford any magazines."

"No, the channel. They're starting a new show on jousting tonight." He even found a glossy full page ad for the show Knights of MayhemAgainst my better judgement, I managed to get through an hour and a half of the premier and second ( Read more... )

Because I kept finding different organizations claiming to hand out prizes but no clear lists of previous winners, I kept expecting the show to fill in the blank. Honestly, I expected them to come back with a European competition to explain why they want to make it bigger in the US. Never said. Which makes me think in the most cynical part of my soul, you are lying your ass off. And his attitude did not dispel that thought.

Then in the second episode, they kept saying they were going to the West Coast Jousting Championships being held with the festival. Okay, tournament means to me you are competing with jousters outside your troupe. I think that's what it means to most of the viewing audience. I didn't finish the episode but the review I linked to said: But there’s a bigger issue that goes unaddressed: Despite its grand name, the only competitors in the West Coast Jousting Championships seem to be Charlie and his team.
That's not a tourney; that's a troupe hired to perform at the faire ( ... )

Sadly, the IJA-USA website is down right now...

The Canada one is up:http://www.cricketlane.ca/joust-canada/gallery.html

I know Nikki and Jeremy (if you read the captions); on the picture of 4 fighters labelled "The foot fighters at
the Grand Hastilude, Canada", Nikki is the short woman, and Jeremy is the center man.

Jeremy and Nikki both work from actual medieval fighting manuals; Jeremy has essentially a dojo for teaching medieval swordfighting. They both compete all over the world. Nikki was just in New Zealand.

I was really disappointed that the show was about that jerkoff rather than a historically-oriented organization. It seems to me they just went for cheap audience thrills rather than history.

Granted my dander was already up when he slammed rennies (while at a renfaire). I stage-managed the joust arena, took care of the squires, built the stable one year so the joust troupe didn't have to (they ran late that year so the horses would have had no where to live if we hadn't) for four years before burnout and other issues made me drop working a renfaire. I love a well-done, historically accurate joust. Hell I love the Knight's Tale jousts. Friends had to sit on me to keep me from fixing other people's jousts *cough*Four Winds*cough*. The rennies are the ones who would be dragging other people to see your show and sell out the arenas. And I watched that concept fly right over his bald head in the first episode ( ... )
