I'm always somewhat in awe of you fan-mixy people. I can usually find a song or 2 that will relate to a char or a situation, but a whole album's worth? I don't think I've ever managed that.

Some are easier than others. With my Biker Mice From Mars: Wars Are Won series, I used songs in the text so it was a matter of expanding to include songs that represent characters or situations. Tin Man: Pirates of the Nonestic fits in here too.

BMFM: Evil Jack series, Tin Man: Dragons and Ninjas, Tin Man/Alice: Making Whole, and the unfinished one for my Legend of Zelda fanfic series are collections of songs representing characters and relationships.

But it does help me having a set playlist when you're focusing on the story. *Snort* When I was stuck on one scene in writing Turbo, I put the one song dealing with it on repeat and didn't change it until I got finished.

Usually I start with gathering songs or bands that fit for an inspirational music folder and then my choices solidify to that song is for that character. I think the larger part of my issue is that I don't make story-specific playlists. I have one playlist that I write to, almost no matter what I'm writing. It just gets me in the mental and emotional place where I can concentrate on the very act of writing. Sometimes if I need to evoke a certain mood or tenor I'll look for a specific song, but otherwise it's the same, I dunno, 50+ songs for anything I write.

I blame the unintentional song fics. Biker Mice From Mars featured musical shout-outs when they could, so when I started my Wars Are Won fanfic series, I found songs to quote. It grew from there.
