When we were leaving a bar one night, I could swear I saw some guy getting shaken down for money. The two guys intimidating the third guy kind of were dressed like ruffians and the third guy was dressed like a businessman or something. And the "businessman" kept making apologetic sounds and I think bowing and stuff.
Amy (Aussie friend of Vikki and Joey's, who lived in Kyoto as an English teacher) was leading the way out of the bar and she brushed right past the confrontation without a blink of the eye. So the rest of us followed suit.
I'm not sure that was actually what was going on, mind you. It could have been that the "businessman" was drunk and his friends were on his case about it. Or something. Who knows? :o

but I have to agree, I have never been anywhere that felt safer than wandering around Japan. it's not perfect by a long shot, but iit's a really odd feeling
