The girl stiffened and swiped at her face, prompting him to sit down on the ground next to her. ‘Your mother is worried about you, my lady.’
‘I’m fine!’ she snapped, even as tears gathered in her eyes.
After a moment, she burst out: ‘How can he be so mean? Doesn’t Gwendal care about me at all?’
‘Sometimes those we care for cannot express themselves well,’ he replied slowly. ‘We must learn to read between the lines.’
She nodded, and he stayed with her, until she could finally look up at him and smile.
‘Thank you, Raven.’
