Supermum

By Clorinda

She was a superwoman in her own right.

If I go crazy then will you still

Call me Superman?

If I'm alive and well, will you be

There, holding my hand

I'll keep you by my side with

My superhuman might.

"You're unqualified to comment," Celi laughs when he pokes fun at her for being pregnant in an evening gown. Dan Hiri's only mildly put-out by the prospect of having a child he can't raise ("The jungles are obviously no place for a baby," he says, and she just rolls her eyes.)

Gwendal has the same misgivings. He's not as excited about a new baby as they want him to be; he frowns up at Dan Hiri with enquiring, condemning eyes. "Thank God you weren't my father."

Dan Hiri doesn't mention it to Celi; he laughs with her about everything else. Nowadays, she's always covered in rouge and furs. She eats well and drives him up the wall with blueberry and other plebeian cravings; she baby-talks all the time; he knows she's trying to distract herself from Stoffel's "subtle" hints about the unborn prince's lineage.

Then, the fortnight is over and he feels the pull of the nomadic country, and he kisses her goodbye in the dawn, bathed in red sun, and slips out of the door. He's never regretted it more.

A pigeon finds him with a letter: it tells him that they have a son named Conrart. As he writes his reply, with the salty tang of the sea breeze in his nostrils, he remembers with a rush the how her hand shook when Stoffel spoke to her. How she always smelt of wine. How there were tears in her eyes for the first time when he said goodbye.
