Reverse Gender Casting

Keith and I brainstormed Batman casting, reversing the genders *waves at a certain messageboard*. Taking into account that we're not social butterflies, so some of these names are older folks (by Hollywood standards), we came up with ( Read more... )

Wow. That's a fascinating casting. Now I kind of need to see that movie.

It was a weird exercise for me, since I never play the "cast so'n'so" game. I had to apply the standards used for actresses on actors and wow, were the final choices limited once we added "not ugly in the face". Then there was this urge to cast action actresses in the male roles, as if though actresses in general can't do physical roles - an assumed limitation not applied to actors. Once I told myself that Milla, Angelina and Kate couldn't be anyone, it was easy.

I see what you mean. That was part of what made it a surprising casting, although it shouldn't have been.

Crap. The name of another good actress for Penguin is escaping me, dammit. She was on one of the lawyer shows a while back, though, and wrote a lovely book.

*looks that up* Okay, I still have no idea who she is, but at least she's a genuine actress.

Great casting! I can't pick a favorite because they're all so good, but, um, Michelle Pfeiffer as the Joker because she's got that shit-eating grin? She SO does not.

Okay, maybe a little. Anyway, I would definitely pay to see this movie. I saw Michelle Rodriguez once and I would have asked for an autograph if I knew she was going to be Tim! =)

The hardest part was running the dual double-standard filter against physical appearances. There is a tendency to forget that many famous male leads are pretty ugly, when using the same strict standards applied to actresses. Likewise, there is a tendency to choose actresses based on her face rather than demeanor and presence.

Catwoman and Poison Ivy were the hardest to reverse cast. Selina requires a combination of beauty (not prettiness), with physical strength and a dominating presence. We came up with a list of male actors and it turned into a short list once we added the requirement: beautiful face and body. Not pretty, not effeminate, not "craggy", but symmetrical, smooth, larger eyes, strong eyebrows, etc. (Pierce Bronson was on the list, but I see him more as Talia - absolutely suave compared to Selina's occasional rugged scruffiness). Ivy was even harder because, while physical strength is no longer a requirement, hypnotic seductiveness was. Subbing actresses into male roles was easy once I forced myself to ignore the desire ( ... )
