I sympathize on the "new clothing" thing drwex August 31 2011, 13:51:46 UTC
Trying on lots of new clothing in a store is an unpleasant form of self-torture for me. On purchase, everything goes immediately in the wash.

There was (and probably still is) a form of chemical that is generally known as "sizing" that is sprayed on clothing with the goal of helping them keep their desired size when being tried on (and thus stretched and pulled out of size) in the store. This 'sizing' has a smell I dislike and tends to make fabric stiffer and rougher to the touch. At least, that's my experience.

Sizing chemical! That is good to know. Whatever it is, it reacts with my sweat to generate a horrible smell & gives me a rash.

If you google for "textile sizing chemicals" you'll get links to places that make the stuff and some organic fiber places that rail about it.

On Wikipedia it's called "Textile warp sizing" but I haven't searched that term specifically - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sizing
