Another day in village-y Britain...

Monkey and I are getting accustomed to having breakfast on the terrace, although it is somehow stressful, since we must keep an eye on the Damn Kitten, as she is too young to roam around freely. And Damn Kitten has very much understood where she should not go (i.e. the neighbour's roof) and keeps trying to sneak away from our constant watch ( Read more... )

I am not sure how conveniently located these are, probably not very, but there are farmers' markets in Peckham and Blackheath every Sunday:

I was thinking about A&C as well but E is a bit suspicious, especially about delivery. And we go shopping to West Ealing every Saturday and although that's not organic (I try to buy organic cheese and milk if at all possible, otherwise we're pretty un-organic) it's quite cheap and varied and we walk --> we are supporting local shop and accumulate no extra food miles ;). But somehow I am intrigued by getting a random selection of foods and being creative when cooking with new veggies. Also concerning A&C, I was thinking that the best (most ethical) option are their farmers choice boxes as that's the only guaranteed regional box. There are definitely more foodmiles hidden in the others.

thanks for the link! unfortunately, as much as Peckham and Blackheath would be very close if we had a car and were willing to drive (which would not be great for the carbon foodprint), it's a bit in the asshole of the world if we were taking the transports -- I don't even want to think how many bus changes we'd need to do.
The other problem with markets, is that my situation now (i.e. at home, not working) is very temporary and I'll be very soon back to work, and much probably working at weekends (somehow I do not trust Mr Monkey for veg. shopping; i'm sure he could find chocolate cabbage rather than the real stuff); which is why I was very tempted for A&C - and we were going to get the Farmer's choice, but thanks for the information. We get an organic box with our monthly online shopping at tesco (which is great b/c it made me discover Kolrhabi and forced me to eat turnips) but we can't live on one box a month plus I want to get away from the tesco-unethical-vicious-circle as soon as we can... we thought about getting on the ( ... )

Kohlrabi, ha. I ate that as a child a lot, now my stomach doesn't like it anymore. and I love turnips! potato-carrot-turnip mash is easy and yummy!
yeah, Tesco is evil, although I bought my Ecover washing up liquid there today.

do you mean open a community or just post in our private journals? generally it's a good idea, and I guess there are loads of little things that one can do and "ethical" seems like a wide field.

i originally meant our LJ, and then thought a community may be a good idea although I haven't looked up yet how easy it is to create a community, if such communities already exist etc...
I was thinking, we could even do weekly themes, etc.
yeah, ethical is a wide field b/c i figured 'people' may get bored if we were only dealing with, say, carbon footprint, or fairtrade or whatever, while a mix of all makes things somehow funnier; and people interested in the environment are generally interested in humanitarian etc etc [although not always; take the soup kitchen where i volunteer: no matter how many times I (and others)have groaned about the inexistence of recycling policy, they just don't give a shit];anyways, if you're up to creating a community, WHY NOT???! If you want to keep it on our LJs, that's cool too!!!
