I am slowly teaching myself to sew. Mostly I have made tea towels and curtains. But last week I made a skirt. I have trouble with patterns, so I got a book that tells you how to figure things out without patterns, and it worked pretty good.

Yes, that does make sense. Next time I do this I will plan the the skirt, and then go up straight a bit for the waist band. That seems so logical now that you mention it. Thank you. Sewing is fun.

I'm having fun sewing too! I love your skirt, it looks very pretty. :)

The top edge of your skirt is smaller than where you need to sew it. So, you have to ease the fabric in. The easiest way to do this is to turn the skirt inside out and pull it onto the pointy end of your ironing board, waist first. At the slit where the drawstring comes out, fond the fabric down properly inline. Pin. Do this for both sides. Move 3" down on either side. Fold over the fabric 1.5" or whatever is required for your drawstring. The narrower the better. Pin. The easiest way to do this is to use a metal ruler like this one: http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog.jsp?CATID=cat3423&PRODID=prd56242 You place it between the two layers of fabric and the red slide tells you were to fold to. Anyway, repeat every 3" until you reach the other end. Go around again, using your left fingers to create tension between the two 3" pins. Pin in the middle near the 1.5" mark. You don't have to measure the 1.5" at this point; tension will pull the ( ... )
