Citric acid is a powder, and not impossible to find -- I've seen Bob's Red Mill packaging it for sale. It's like 99% of the ingredients in unsweetened powdered instant lemonade, so you could use that as well (and your detergent will have a friendly yellow or pink tinge and smell lemon-fresh).
So, in my very-quick research last night, I saw the following on several websites:
"washing soda is the stuff that Arm & Hammer sells, you can find it in the grocery store"
"washing soda and baking soda are the same thing..." (but since I was looking at this on Google, I didn't read the crucial end of that sentence, which makes it clear that they aren't the same thing at all)
Etc. etc. etc. So I thought they were the same thing.
Washing soda and baking soda are NOT the same. Washing soda is sodium carbonate, and baking soda is sodium bicarbonate. Washing soda is more basic, caustic, and can eat through twice the amount of acid that baking soda can. YES, Arm & Hammer sells it, but it'll be in the laundry section of the store (and it might be called soda ash).

Maybe it depends on what kind of apron you're wearing while you make it.

Also: citric acid. I'm so very ignorant. Is that a powder, and easy to find somewhere? All the other ingredients seem to be dry.
