Still no internet. When the technician ran a diagnostic and said, "That's really weird! I've never seen anything that weird!" I knew it was going to be a long wait. And your description of Oil! sounds very like The Jungle, in its socialist preachiness and vague attempt at a plot...

And yeah, that sounds pretty similar. The thing is, I agree with him that it was pretty horrible the way big business treated labor (and still does sometimes). But the novel would have been more effective if I could have cared about any of the people oppressed, but since the main character is the son of a big oilman, I don't even get a chance to get to know any of the oppressed laborers. And the main character is too much like various campus communists I knew at Chicago for him to be that sympathetic a character.
