Photo Essay: No, She Will Not Love You Long Time

Jan 15, 2009 14:55

A few weeks ago, multiple folks linked to the race issue related to the casting of the Avatar movie. Namely, that all the Asian characters had been cast with white actors. My son is a huge fan of the cartoon series, and he asked me, confused and unhappy, how something like this was possible. I didn't have a good answer.

Fod and I have had many, many conversations around race, culture, and media. Still, I don't feel any more ready to speak to the source or scope of the problem than I did before.

The truth is, I don't essay well. In response to fandom issues, I usually write fic. In response to socio-political issues, I usually argue loudly.

I tried to do something different this time around.

I'm not Lum, or Sisabet, and when it comes to vidding, uhm, I'm a really good writer. Also, the quality of you tube is kinda sucky, which I never realized before actually using it myself. I might put this up on ficbitch if people decide they want to DL it.

Still, creating this was deeply satisfying. I hope it works for some of you too, and I'd love to hear your thoughts.

ETA: Because people have been asking, I also uploaded to Vimeo for better quality. Find that link Here.
