Drabble: Understanding

Did no one else in the village understand?

Anko understood.  She understood everything.  She understood that her childhood friend; the only one who knew her secrets; was happy now.

She could have cared less about what some people thought, though she’d made a point of quietly threatening anyone who’d dared to make their disapproval public.  She refused to let him get hurt by their vulgar words and stinging censure.

And she had learned well from her childhood playmate.  After Hyuuga Hiashi had wound up hanging naked from the main gate; painted bright purple and with the words, ‘I am a bigoted asswipe,’ written in chakra-infused paint on his forehead; the naysayers had quietly faded into the background.

Even being called before the Hokage for that had not lessened her determination.  Besides, she’d explained reasonably to an amused Tsunade and a quietly approving Ibiki, the paint would fade once he admitted aloud in public that, yes, he was a bigoted asswipe.

As long as Iruka was happy, she would face anything; risk anything to maintain that.

And being with Kakashi made him happy.

Anko understood that, and she’d make damned sure the whole village did too.
