In Japan people are usually ALOT less likely to strike up a random conversation with you. Even less so if you are foreign (because you prolly can't speak Japanese anyways). Hi Khea,

Like you I have had some good experiences with the local "baachan" & "jiichan" wherever I have lived.

The local conbini teenagers new me well and I was always cheeful and happy to say hello and after awhile the warmed to me also- especially once they realized I understood Japanese.

I am happy to hear you have had good experiences! I have had bad experiences and good experiences (my bad experiences have been in the bank though- luck you got lucky!) but usally once people realize I am friendly and speak Japanese I have had no issues.
