There is a story being passed off as news - about how the Bush family had to put their dog Spot to sleep. This article, yet another example of the worthless drivel that gets pumped out as real news has to squeeze on by, has actual paragraphs - paragraphs! When other folks have to put their beloved pets to sleep, it does not make the headlines and ( Read more... )

I'm not trying to hear that their dog was named Spot... That just has "token dog" written all over it.

As for the newsworthiness of the story, I am quickly learning that there is a fine line between news and entertainment.

I wont say where I heard this, but they're talking about the December 25th mudslide in the San Bernardino mountains:

Person 1 "Give me the numbers."
Person 2 "One confirmed dead. Fourteen missing."
Person 1 "Kids?"
Person 2 "Most of them. Wow, this is some story."
person 1 "You think THIS is a story, wait 'til tomorrow."
person 1 "Tomorrow?"
Person 2 "Yeah... when they find the bodies."

Don Henley said it best: "It's interesting when people die; Give us dirty laundry."

I don't watch or listen to the news often, if I can help it, because of shit like that. I tend to hear about the news through several sources:

AOL - When I sign on, sometimes headlines look interesting. I tend to focus on the little bits of science and health news they have.

My mom - Oh man can she pick out the worst of the stories that bleed. But that's just her style.

Nathan - He skims the paper at work and reads bits; he tends to focus on government issues. He finds some nice off-the-track things, too.

Rich - He too focuses on government stuff, but he also tends to have a look at things that are going on locally.

Fark.com - I like to browse there when I have the chance because so much of it is off-color stuff.

Thing is, they had this damned Spot story on AOL's headlines and even on Fark, like it was a real story. That bothers me.
