i figure i should watch these (or at least most of them) before letting myself subscribe to netflix.

Holy crap watch Mad Men, it's phenomenal

Of course, then you'll be craving seasons 2-4, but it's that good

While you're at it, Breaking Bad is amazing

I haven't watched most of those, but I thought The Wire was amazing - very smart writing, plot development, realistic depiction of tough city issues, good acting.

It's going to be hard to make a bad choice here.

During its first two seasons Six Feet Under was probably my favorite show ever. I was lukewarm on Season 3 and hated Season 4. The final season rallied, but wasn't terrific. But man, those first two years were incredible.
