Bill's nesting instincts had started to kick in, just as the slight curve of his belly had started to grow into something more definite. Tom knew exactly where to find Bill and their other babies when he got home: he poked his head into the nursery and smiled.
"Hey, careful." Tom moved in to steady the chair Bill was standing on. The dogs milled excitedly around him, though they didn't jump up to greet him. They seemed to realize that one of their human parents had to be treated with the utmost care, and tended to cluster around Bill in a canine herd, as if to ward off any dangers.
"Whatever, I'm fine." Bill nudged Tom with a foot. "You and them, I swear."
"Like you really mind," said Tom. He took and squeezed the hand Bill offered out to him. "Wall's looking nice."
"Better be. These stencils are not as easy to use as they claim on the package," said Bill, and let Tom help him down. He set the paintbrush in the tray of paint he'd been using and looked up,

Bill is a famous beauty (a dancer maybe, or just royalty or something) and Tom is his bodyguard! Maybe Tom is in love with Bill and hopes they could be more? But he thinks it would be impossible and anyway, Bill doesn't feel the same? Closeness and protection and unrequited (?) love. *____* Wait is this too detailed.
Unrequited but not unrequited love is always a winner. They're dancing around each other; made me feel like I was intruding on a fluffy private moment ^3^

i love the way you write his dialect/accent in this story. it instantly sets the mood for the whole thing and throws me into that era.
i would love more. this is one of my faves.
