all bark, but no lungs
It's not something Teoh consciously does, but sometimes he doesn't realize he's saying something awful to Tom until it's already out of his mouth and Tom's lips are pressed into a thin line. Teoh supposes that he does it to get a rise out of Tom, to make Tom look his direction every once in a while because even though they're very over, Teoh misses it sometimes. He misses the way Tom would take his words and spit them back with twice the force. He misses when Tom used to know he didn't mean it.
"What," Teoh says, "can't take Ben's cock, Milsom? I don't remember you being such a wuss."
Teoh knows the statement is uncalled for, and Ben shoots him a look that says I love you but I will punch you. Tom merely glances toward Teoh, frowning, and Teoh knows he knows then. He should cut it out, probably, but there's something in Teoh that can't leave it alone. He's like a kid that keeps picking at a scab even though it's painful as all fuck and probably going to bleed all over again.
And really, Teoh should probably be expecting it when Tom starts snarking back, but it's still a pleasant surprise. It's not the same as before, not exactly, but it's close enough that Teoh can fall back into it. Ben is shooting curious looks between them, obviously not sure what to make of their little pissing match, but Teoh's focused entirely on Tom.
"It's only," Tom smiles, "because you could have never prepared me for Ben."
The laughter is probably uncalled for, but Teoh doesn't care. It's good to know that Tom hasn't lost his sense of fun. So that's how it progresses, the slide from tentative friends into fairly decent ones again. They just bitch at each other and make fun of each other and it's almost like it was only the rules of this game are slightly different. The point of it isn't to see who squirms the most, but to say the most outlandish thing and get away with it in front of everyone. Most of their circle of friends has caught onto their game, though, and gives them mildly disappointed looks whenever they try to start upon again.
So they back off, but it still slips out every once in a while and it's not vicious, Teoh can promise anyone who asks that, but it sounds terrible. That's sort of how they show their affection now, though, so Teoh doesn't stop. He doesn't try to soften his words. That would be defeating the purpose of what they're going for, so Teoh just smiles when he periodically berates Tom and sometimes laughs when Tom berates him back.
"Keep trying," Tom says when they're in the studio, "and maybe if you hit enough buttons it'll come out sounding good."
Coming from Tom, Teoh counts it as a compliment. He rolls his eyes.
"Is that what you do? Bang on the keys and hope you get a decent song? Well, if the great Tom Milsom does it then it must be a grand technique."
"Well, at least I can play instruments."
Tom is smirking when he says it, and Teoh just shakes his head, laughing, because he doesn't really have a response for that at all.
