It was in the bliss of the night when everything changed. The king’s ward stirred in her nightmare-filled slumber and her handmaiden clutched at her bedclothes as she tossed under the blanket. Things were changing, but no one knew what. Not yet.
Deep in the caverns of the castle sat the dragon, who felt the shimmering rays of magic. He smiled knowingly, and then spread his wings.
On a tower in the castle of Camelot, a candle flickered out of life as the last of the wax melted into a forgotten pool. Now the only thing that lit the room was of the glittering stars, like fireflies coming out at night. The room was in a gently breeze, warm enough to sleep without a blanket, but cool enough to rely on body warmth.
Two bodies lay sprawled across a snow white mattress, limbs entwined and one hand tracing lightly over the other’s spine. Their creamy skin shone in the darkness so soon after their fits of ecstasy. Their fingers tangled together and feet curled into a perfect match, like a jigsaw puzzle; made for each other.
The blond watched as the younger man slept. Eyes rolled underneath their eyelids and he could tell that his lover was dreaming. Smiling, the royal prince curled into his servant’s arms and closed his eyes.
Nights like these were rare; Camelot at peace, and no worries or concerns. There was no regret or hurt, no anger or betrayal. Everyone was content as they rested their heads on their pillows and slept. But everything always changed. Winters changed to summers; people died and babies were born. Things changed, and on this particular night, nothing would ever be the same again.
As one hand rested on the secret warlock’s stomach, something within was just beginning to live.
