The dream made no sense at all, and it made perfect sense. He was watching Bones talk with Sybok, and like an Andorian movie translated, the words didn't seem to fit the motions of their mouths. He was talking about Spock, talking about himself and Spock, and their relationship. Sybok told him that while Jim remained, he couldn't be fully with Spock. Put a hand on Bones' forehead...
Jim jerked awake in their sleeping back, breathing hard as he looked around, then down at the man asleep beside him. He rubbed his face a few times, the last tendrils of the nightmare wrapped him. To get rid of them, he slipped out of the sleeping bag and went to the edge of the lake, splashing his face with some water. Hell of a way to wake up on Christmas morning.
That smile... every time, it still did something in him he could never explain, turning him up inside in all the right ways. It left him starting to smile too, even as emotions bubbled up so fast inside of him he couldn't keep track.
"Yes, really." He laughed, a sound of shock and surprise more than anything, and tugged Bones up so he could kiss him.
It took a moment for him to get up there but soon he was standing there, looking back at Jim, kissing him. His hands found their place, wrapped around him and Bones pulled him into a tight hug.
"Yes," he repeated to himself, his face buried in Jim's neck, still grinning wide as he kissed the warm skin. "I promise you, Jim, I'll make you happy, I swear it."
"You already do make me happy," Jim said against Bones' ear, holding him tight. "Can I ask you a question?" Now he was curious, and he wanted to know the why. "What brought this on, anyway?"
Not that he was complaining. It was still a little lot over whelming, but there was a weird giddy rush inside of him he couldn't deny.
He pulled his head back, just enough to look at Jim. "Not entirely sure," he admitted, feeling that same explosion of confusion inside him. "I just - I want you to know who you are to me," he tried to explain. "No matter what happens, I need you and everyone else to know that you are mine and I am yours, before any law or god or Starfleet. If that means making it legal..." Bones gave Jim another little smile and kissed his cheek. "It feels right to me."
But he wasn't the one with the anxiety about all this. "What about you?" His eyes danced over Jim's face, looking for that look, one he half-expected. The one that said 'too much, too fast'. "You sure?"
To say it didn't feel like something out of control was to lie, but instead of the fear, anxiety, or immediate urge to run away that Jim would have expected out of himself, instead he just felt a tightness, anticipation, and a few emotions he couldn't even label. Joy was there, threaded through every bit of it though.
"I don't know how I'm supposed to feel about it," Jim admitted, his smile almost sheepish, "but... I want to. Definitely."
Fuck, that look made Jim look so damn young and for a moment Bones wondered if this was right - to chain a shooting star like Jim Kirk to someone like him.
But Bones knew he was too selfish to let Jim go, not now that he found him and had him. Nosing at Jim's ear, he whispered, "Come back to bed with me, Jim?", taking the other man's hands in his and tugging him toward the campsite.
"...anywhere." Jim followed Bones, his body chilled but he didn't feel it anymore. Only when he climbed back into the sleeping bag, their bodies seeking out each other in familiar patterns, did he realize how cold he was. He wrapped his arm over top of Bones, burrowing against the back of his neck.
