Too Many Questions!

Nov 10, 2009 21:12

I have a few many questions regarding shuttles and, as an aside, McCoy’s aviophobia, that I figure might best be answered with discussion.

Looking around Memory Alpha did not quite provide me with what I need )

Bones HAS to be over his aviophobia by the time he gets on that shuttle to Enterprise because he is all kinds of hanging his head out that window. No way if he wasn't would he be able to be distracted just by the Enterprise's (no matter how glorious it is) visage. That's what I think, anyway ( ... )

He really *is* all "ooo pretty" isn't he? I'd almost forgotten that. Which definitely says a lot about where he might be mentally. I mean he *does* purposefully draw Jim's attention to it.

I had thought about the going into space to travel faster, but then I wasn't sure if it would be as logical to do so for a Iowa to California hop. So yay opinions!

Yeah I thought that might be the case regarding crashes, though now you've got me wondering about satellites. I'm sure we would try and consolidate them. Hmm..

I'm so glad you said a couple hours. I can imagine a shortened time but nothing safe for a short time over that length when I thought of impulse.

I hadn't considered transporters planetside. That gives me a couple of good ideas I hadn't gotten around to contemplating yet. How much use would transporters get planetside I wonder.

What about privately hired flying shuttles? Or small interstate shuttles? I assume they might file flight plans, and maybe have some tracking for the interstate shuttles. Is it possible that those types of smaller trips might disappear off the radar for a while until someone noticed they were overdue? Especially a privately hired transport, maybe they might have less tracking?

Interesting points you've got here (we're on totally opposite ends where transporter use is concerned. Ain't that fabulous? :D ) But shuttles going into warp? Where do they keep their warp core? Or are you thinking larger shuttles, not the smaller transport shuttles we see in the movie?

*loves this thread like WOAH*

Yes! I agree, I can see several contemplations of his phobias. The best explanation I can see is regarding some control with limitations.

This was great! I'm glad you think there are civilian shuttles and that their amenities would vary. I LOVE your explanation of their speed. As for your take on shuttle crashes, that's very helpful!, especially the 'tracking satellites' thought.

Depending on the type of craft, what kind of damage could be expected from a crash? While the engines of the future are likely volatile, I wonder what safety measures they have in place in case of crashes. Speed, engines, craft, safety features, all have me wondering about the various degrees of severity of crashes.

So true. I definitely don't want them pancaked. Just various degrees of banged-up. And thank you so much for the link! I'm going to be perusing like crazy now.

Way more of my opinion than you probably ever wanted... :D near_family November 11 2009, 06:54:30 UTC
I concur on a couple hours of flight time for a shuttle from Iowa to San Francisco. As far as getting to the Enterprise? No idea really. You could check out NASA's website and see if they have some stats on that or something ( ... )

Response to a crash would depend on population settlement and whether there are emergency stations set up in sparsely populated areas of the world. Not really sure if they'd use transporters to beam relief personnel in or not. I'm kinda leaning toward “no” on that one. After all, if transporters are used for emergency relief why wouldn't they be used for Star-fleet personnel? Why weren't the cadets beamed to San Francisco or up to the Enterprise? I don't think transporters are widely used planet-side. Considering all the wacky shit the transporters got up to in TOS and others I'm thinking they're a lot more complicated than we tend to think. I tend to think that transporter technology is used mostly by Star Fleet, Federation buildings/organizations, and maybe a few larger private organizations. It might also be Star Fleet privilege, meaning only they use it ( ... )

You're level of detail was great! Just what I was hoping for! Especially regarding the troposphere, stratosphere, ect. You reinforced some of the ideas I had, so yay!
Phobias are irrational fear, no matter how awesome the Enterprise at Space Dock looks, there's no way it would have overridden that fear. I agree. I do know that the severity of phobias vary. McCoy showed some problems in regards to being likely to vomit but his panic, as we saw it visually, was fairly mild. Which made me wonder about his tolerance threshold for that moment and the window scene. I know I can be distracted from my phobia of heights by certain stimuli and as I've worked on my phobia the distractions work better and better, so it was a it of speculation on my part regarding the distraction. Though I did word it poorly.

I LOVE your information/speculation on crashes and transporters. Again you are reinforcing some of my ponderings.
