It was very early in the morning when Bones snuck out of Jim`s quarters. The night before involved some serious love making and even though Jim fell asleep immediately afterwards Bones was just too nervous to rest.
Bones had been dreading going back to Olduvai for many years now and even more so the last couple of days. Jim still could not understand why, which only served as incentive for Bones to go through with the plan that’d been formulating in his head since that day in his office.
Bones had decided that if he could prevent anyone from going back to Olduvai he had to. If there was the slightest chance that even one of those demented monsters survived his ST grenade, it was upon him to go and take care of it.
That was why he found himself in the turbo lift punching in the code that would take him to the transporter room’s level. Luckily at that time of delta shift the corridors were empty.
When he entered the transporter room he sat down on the steps in front of the pad. He gripped the PADD he brought with him hard. He closed his eyes for a moment and exhaled loudly. He opened his eyes again and started typing the message he had been composing in his head since early that morning.
From: Dr. L.H. McCoy
To: Cpt. J.T. Kirk
Subject: I love you!
Jim
Olduvai is dangerous and I could not let you, or anyone else, go there. You don’t know what could be hiding there. I am so sorry for never telling you the truth.
I put a code lock on the transporter and none of the shuttles will work for the next six hours. I`m going down there alone to make sure none of those things are still alive.
Please don’t hate me. This is the only way.
If I don`t survive, please know that I have never felt more alive and happy than during these last few years that I’ve known you. You are the most amazing person I’ve ever met.
I love you so much.
Your Bones.

Bones put the PADD down on the floor. He tapped some commands onto the computer screen and stepped back onto the transporter pad as it powered up. He took a deep breath before lights started swirling around him and he beamed down to Olduvai.
--
Three hours later
Jim was staring at the screen of his PADD reading Bones’ message over and over again. It didn’t make sense to him. What were those things he had referred to? What was so damn dangerous? The truth?
He glanced over at Scotty who was working furiously at the transporter computer. Jim couldn’t understand why Scotty had not found a way yet to override the codes Bones had put in. For fuck’s sake, Bones was a doctor, not a computer freak.
“Scotty, tell me you’re getting somewhere.” He was past the point of shouting and being angry. They had been sitting in the room for almost two hours and nothing has changed.
“Captain, I’m doing my best. The doctor must’ve…”
“Well, obviously your best is not good enough. Try harder, try something different. How can Bones outsmart you on a computer?!!” So maybe he was bordering on hysteria but fuck! He wanted to get down on that planet and rip Bones a new one for scaring the piss out of him like that.
Scotty glanced at the captain before continuing what he was doing. His eyes were moving from one side to the other side of the screen at a fast pace. He did not know where the good doctor got his knowledge from but he sure knew how to bugger a beaming system up. And how the bloody hell did he manage to shut ALL the shuttles down? He sure hoped the man survived whatever he deemed so dangerous down there. Scotty reckoned he could learn a thing or two from him.
Another hour had passed when suddenly Ensign Chekov came bursting through the door.
“Captain, I’ve got it!! I can get the doctor back!!” He was staring at Jim while trying to catch his breath. Jim had jumped up when the boy ran into the room. Scotty motioned for Chekov to get over to the computer so that they could work his genius there and get McCoy back.
Jim was hovering behind them not really understanding all the words they were using but hoping against hope that whatever they did, it worked!! After four hours he was really worried about Bones.
It took another half hour for Chekov to break though Bones’ codes.
“Haaahhh.” He and Scotty shouted at the same moment when they managed to look for Bones’ frequency on the screen again.
Scotty looked up at the Captain with a small smile on his face.
“The doctor should be here in a second.”
Jim turned towards the pad with a passive look on his face. Bones was going to have to beg a lot in the near future.
Just then lights were swirling on the transporter pad, indicating the arrival of someone. Of Bones.
What they saw made Jim’s face turn white. Chekov gave and involuntary scream and Scotty jumped up from his seat.
Bones was standing on the pad. Barely able to keep upright. His clothes were torn and blood was covering his face. However, that was not the worst of it. A thick, long silver piece of metal was stuck through Bones’ chest. It was bent at the front and back in such a manner that he could not remove it himself if he tried.
It took Jim a few seconds to comprehend what he was seeing. Just before Bones’ legs gave way beneath him Jim jumped forward to catch him.
“Get someone from medical here, NOW!!!” He shouted in Scotty’s direction. “Fucking hell, Bones. What happened to you?”
But Bones was not answering. His eyes were half lidded and his face was unnaturally white. The big fucking piece of metal was scaring the living shit out of Jim. What the fuck happened down there?
