They've never really known the gods of interface design. They hit on something good by being minimal and have been sliding from there.

Theory I heard (don't recall where... you?) was that the new interface was designed for touchscreens, 'cause that's the wave of the future. I guess decoupling GUI and application is back out of fashion?
